Industrial production in Mexico fell 3.6% in August, due to setbacks in the four sectors, the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi) reported this Friday.

The data is the result of a year-on-year decrease, based on original figures for mining (-6.8%), construction (-4%), generation, transmission, distribution and marketing of electrical energy, water and gas supply (-2.2%) and manufacturing industries (-3.1%).

In seasonally adjusted figures, industrial activity also fell 0.3% compared to last July.

By component, construction fell -2.2%, while mining fell -0.3%.

In contrast, manufacturing industries grew (0.2%) and the generation, transmission, distribution and marketing of electrical energy, supply of water and natural gas through pipelines to the final consumer (1.3%).

With original figures, between January and August 2025, industrial production accumulated a decrease of 1.7% compared to the same period in 2024.

In that period, mining fell 8.1%; construction, 1.8%; energy generation and supply, 2.3%, and manufacturing, 0.6%.

The August result reflects the weakness of the Mexican industrial sector, which had already shown falls in previous months.

In the first half of the year, the indicator had fallen 1.3%, with declines in mining, energy, construction and manufacturing, which anticipated a complex performance in the second half of 2025.

The industrial decline adds to the environment of economic slowdown in Mexico, whose growth for 2025 was recently adjusted to a range of between 0.5% and 1.5%, below the official goal of between 1.5% and 2.3%.

Mexico’s GDP rose 1.2% in 2024, mainly affected by the fall in the primary sector, while in 2023 it rose 3.1%.
