MEXICO CITY.- The most recent estimates on multidimensional poverty in Mexico will be published on August 13 by INEGI, after officially assuming the functions of the former National Council for the Evaluation of Social Development Policy (Coneval), an organ eliminated after a reform driven by Morena and Allies.

Since July 17, the Statistics Institute assumed the responsibility of measuring poverty and evaluating the social development policy in Mexico, according to the constitutional reform that eliminated several autonomous bodies.

The INEGI reported in a statement that it will retain the methodology that the Coneval applied to guarantee continuity and comparability in the multidimensional measurement of poverty, which has been carried out in a biennial way since 2008. It will also protect the historical heritage generated by the Council, which will remain available for public consultation.

In addition to the multidimensional poverty indicator, INEGI will publish the poverty lines for income monthly – including the labor poverty line – as of August 11, with lagged information corresponding to April, May, June and July. From now on, this data will be disseminated between 11 and 13 in each month, depending on the calendar of the National Consumer Price Index (INPC).

MOST CONTEXT: Organizations will make alternate measurement of poverty in the face of extinction of Coneval

For its part, labor poverty will be updated each quarter, and the next publication is scheduled for August 27, corresponding to the second quarter of 2025.

With more than 40 years of experience, INEGI said that its new stage will maintain principles of independence, objectivity and technical rigor, and reiterated its commitment to offer quality public information for decision making in social development.

“The institute assumed this new mandate with strict attachment to its principles of independence,
Objectivity, technical rigor, transparency and replicability, ”he said.
