As a result of the Agreement between Mexico, the United States and Canada (TMEC), the automotive industry has experienced growth in the northern region of the continent that points to a radical transformation, driven by the need for innovation and sustainability.

The effervescent production in the sector was largely due to the implementation and intensification of the rules of origin of the USMCA which, unlike its predecessor, NAFTA, implemented that the general Regional Content Value must contain 70% in trucks and 75% on light cars to be considered of origin and qualify for tariff-free trade.

This growth is reflected in the ratification of the United States and Mexico as second and seventh place, respectively, in the top ten car producing countries, according to a report from the International Organization of Vehicle Manufacturers (OICA).

Likewise, according to data from the National Auto Parts Industry (INA), both countries are in the top five auto parts producers, in which the United States is only surpassed by China, and Mexico occupies fourth position after Japan.

Above all for Mexico, according to data from the Mexican Association of the Automotive Industry (AMIA), this sector has been key to economic development, contributing jobs to more than 900,000 people directly, almost 4% of the gross domestic product ( GDP) national.

In the last five years, this represented that 20 out of every 100 dollars of foreign direct investment (FDI) have been attracted to the automotive sector, positioning it between 2017 and 2022.

The data at the end of the third quarter of 2023 showed Mexico as the leader as a supplier to its northern neighbor, with almost 43% of auto parts purchased, an advance of 4.8% compared to 2022, surpassing Asian nations such as China, Japan or Korea south.

This growth in both countries, both in vehicle production and auto parts, points towards sustainable development, where companies are positioned as key to offering manufacturing, assembly and solutions to improve the performance and safety of vehicles that contribute to the care of the environment. environment, like electric cars.

The solutions proposed by 3M seek greater production by focusing on details, such as the advanced vision system to repair paint defects in automobiles, Finesse-It.

In addition, the barrier and thermal management materials stand out, essential for better charging and heat resistance of the batteries.

Specifically, glass bubbles are key in mixing with polymeric materials to create thermal insulation materials that improve fuel efficiency and give greater battery autonomy, the main concerns of electric vehicle consumers, according to the State of Science survey Insights 2024.

Likewise, the implementation of its microspheres in components reduces weight by 30% and the solar thermal control films optimize energy use by reducing air conditioning use by 20%, improving overall efficiency.
