Losses related to the recent rains and floods in Veracruz, Puebla, Hidalgo, San Luis Potosí and Querétaro represent at least 550 million pesos, according to the Mexican Association of Insurance Institutions (AMIS).
The agency reported in a statement 1,200 accidents until Wednesday’s cutoff, of which 70% were cars, but the most significant damages were concentrated in property assets with more than 400 million pesos.
The AMIS recalled that at the national level the average number of insured vehicles is 33% of the total units in circulation, but the figure is lower in some of the affected entities: in San Luis Potosí it is 18%, in Veracruz 24% and in Hidalgo 30%. In contrast, Querétaro and Puebla present a coverage of 48% and 49%, respectively.
The general director of AMIS, Norma Alicia Rosas, explained that insurers made administrative protocols more flexible to expedite attention to affected vehicles, and reiterated that auto coverage remains in force, even when authorities have carried out the removal of debris or the vehicles themselves.

AMIS asked users to prioritize their safety before moving damaged cars and, if doing so on their own, take photographic evidence to facilitate the claim process. Likewise, he recommended ensuring that the cranes that provide the service are duly authorized.
The agency added that it maintains coordination with local and federal authorities to accelerate the removal of units and evaluate safe entry to the affected areas, since several shelter centers were also damaged.
