International tourism in Mexico grew 13.5% year-on-year in September

Mexico received 13.5% more international tourists last September than in the same month of 2023, accompanied by an increase of more than 2% in economic income from this area, the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi) reported this Monday.

3.31 million foreign tourists arrived in the country in the ninth month of 2024, compared to 2.91 million in the same period of the previous year, according to the autonomous body’s report.

The main annual increase occurred in border tourists, which in September grew 33.4% year-on-year to 1.85 million.

In contrast, those who arrived by air decreased by 6.4% to 1.21 million, while the rest were tourists who entered by land or cruise ships.

Total spending by international tourists rose 2.4% year-on-year in September, reaching 1,605.7 million dollars.

Tourism sector grows 7.4% year-on-year during the first quarter of 2024

In contrast, the average expenditure of each tourist fell 9.8% year-on-year to $484.97 last September.

The data reflects the upward trend in tourism in Mexico, which had 42.15 million international tourists during 2023, 10% more than in 2022.

The foreign exchange income from international visitors in 2023 was 28,682.6 million dollars, almost 9% more than the previous year.

The tourism-related economy, which Inegi calls tourism gross domestic product (GDP), grew 7.4% annually in the first quarter of 2024, driven in particular by domestic services and tourists.

Mexico was the sixth most visited country in the world in 2022 and 2023, according to the Government and businessmen based on data from the World Tourism Organization.
