Is ‘Destiny 2’ Getting More Reprised Raids? New Ones? New Expansions? A Sequel? We Don’t Know

Bungie has mapped out the next year of Destiny 2 in the wake of The Final Shape. We know we are getting three Episodes, extended, broken up seasons, ones focused on the Vex, then the Scorn, then the Hive, and we know the loose plotlines of the disconnected stories.

But we don’t know much past that, and it’s gotten the fanbase confused about where exactly the game is going from here. Among the issues:

  • The dungeon schedule appears to be different than before where they’re skipping this Episode and doing what seems like one in each of the next two episodes, given that they sold a dungeon pass.
  • As such, it seems likely that Bungie is not going to continue to do reprised raids, as none were announced during the preview of Episodes and it seems unlikely that one would be stacked on top of a season already getting a dungeon. There is only one left from Destiny 1 to reprise, the beloved Wrath of the Machine, but there remain many vaulted raids from Destiny 2 that could also return. But Bungie has not commented one way or the other, leading players to believe it’s not happening.
  • We assume that Bungie is going to keep making new raids in the future, given how key that kind of content is to the franchise, but given the lack of announcement of a new expansion, that is not guaranteed.
  • We do not even know right now that Bungie is continuing to do traditional expansions, given that one has not been announced. Only “Destiny 2: Frontiers” which does not seem like an expansion, or else they would have said it was. I have to believe they will still do expansions as they need that $100 bundle selling point each year, but again, we know nothing in an era when Bungie was previously laying out expansion schedules three years ahead of time.
  • Then, the eternal question of Destiny 3. Is Bungie making it? How long can Destiny 2 itself actually last? I’ve seen theories that we will skip an expansion, get another year of just episodes, and then get Destiny 3 in 2026. I do not believe this is possible given that the studio broke their backs getting Final Shape out, leaving it all on the field for the excellent expansion. I do not think you can get a full sequel out in two years past that if you’re not cutting some serious corners or drastically reducing the scale. Though I may be able to buy a year off of expansions, given current circumstances.

The main thing is that the fanbase feels in the dark. The game’s playercount is beginning to drop sharply in the wake of The Final Shape as less people are interested in Episodes compared to the seasons following Lightfall last year. Some of it is the content there, some of it is wondering if it’s time to pause Destiny indefinitely with the future so unclear. We need to know more.
