J.K. Rowling is weighing in on HBO’s Harry Potter reboot, and she’s fully backing the upcoming series.
Following the release of the show’s first teaser, which has sparked mixed reactions online, the author shared her enthusiastic response on X, calling the upcoming adaptation “incredible” and saying she’s “so happy” with how it looks. Her comment came in response to a fan who tagged Rowling for her reaction, calling the trailer “bloody marvelous,” adding that they “cannot wait,” and it seems “neither can the rest of the world.”
The series adapts 1997’s Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, with the first teaser revisiting several iconic moments from Harry’s early journey: from receiving his Hogwarts letter and meeting Hagrid to getting his wand and arriving at Platform 9 3/4, where he first crosses paths with Ron Weasley. It also teases key elements of his first year, including the Sorting Hat ceremony, lessons with McGonagall and Snape, a Quidditch match, and early rivalries with Slytherins like Draco Malfoy.
At the same time, the reboot isn’t sticking strictly to familiar ground. The footage introduces new material not seen in the books or films, including a deeper look at Harry’s life at his Muggle school and a more playful first-year moment, with Harry caught in a snowball fight as Hagrid makes snow angels.
And while there’s been plenty of fans, including Rowling herself, who are loving the trailer, there’s also been lots of social media debate about the tone and direction of the highly anticipated project. While some viewers praised the teaser’s more grounded approach, others criticized its darker aesthetic, noting a lack of color, whimsy, and visible magic compared to the original film series. The reboot has also faced backlash over casting decisions, including Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape, as well as renewed criticism tied to Rowling’s ongoing controversies.
Despite the divided response, HBO is moving full steam ahead. The series, which began filming in the UK last summer, is set to premiere on Christmas Day 2026, with a new cast led by Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter alongside Alastair Stout, Arabella Stanton, John Lithgow, Janet McTeer, and Nick Frost.
Harry Potter season 1 will premiere on December 25, 2026.
