The Mexican soccer team starts as a broad favorite to revalidate its Gold Cup title due to the numbers that the team’s history has already registered in the Concacaf tournament, technical director Javier Aguirre said on Monday.

Mexico, maximum winner of the Gold Cup with nine titles, and that remained in Group A next to the Dominican Republic, Surinam and Costa Rica, will play the opening match on June 14 at the Sofi stadium in Inglewood, California.

“It is true that numbers and history indicate that we have the obligation to be favorites and I have to accept that we are actually candidates for the title,” said Aguirre in videoconference organized by Concacaf.

“Yes, we are favorites, I do not deny it, but respecting everyone we are not the only favorites, anything can happen,” he added.

The Concacaf Tournament Group Phase will be played from June 14 to 24.

The first two of each of the four groups will advance to the quarterfinals that will be played on June 28 and 29. The semifinals will be played on July 2, and four days later the final will be played at the NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas.

“These games that we have played with the National Team have allowed me to draw good conclusions, and the more we play I will be right in the choice of players (for the World Cup). We are on the right way,” said Aguirre.
