A judge determined on Monday that President Donald Trump can veto the Associated Press (AP) news agency, but asked him to reconsider his decision, taken after the media decided to continue calling the Gulf of Mexico with his traditional name, instead of the new name “Gulf of America” adopted by the president.
Judge Trevor McFadden, from the Court of the Columbia district, refused Air Force One presidential plane.
AP announced last Friday that he demanded three members of the Trump administration after being vetoed for not complying with the guideline to refer to the Gulf of Mexico as “Gulf of America.”
The agency claimed that its exclusion violates the freedom of expression protected by the first amendment of the Constitution.
McFadden, appointed by Trump in his first term, argued that AP could not prove to have suffered irreparable damage, but urged the government to reconsider its position, because it considered “problematic” that the White House has “discriminated” to a means of communication.
The White House celebrated the judge’s decision in a statement, stating that asking questions to the president in the oval office or board of the Air Force One is a “privilege” granted to certain journalists, not a “legal right” of the media.
LEE: AP demands Trump officials for veto related to the Gulf of Mexico
“We remain firm in our decision to demand responsibility for false news media for their lies, and President Trump will continue to provide an unprecedented level of access to the press. This is the most transparent administration in history, ”said the White House.
AP’s complaint is directed specifically against the president’s chief of the president, Susie Wiles, his number two, Taylor Budowich, and the White House spokeswoman, Karoline Leavitt.
In his style guide, AP decided to continue calling the Gulf of Mexico by its original name, although also mentioning the new term chosen by Trump, considering that it is a body of water that shares border with Mexico and Cuba.
Trump signed the executive order to rename it as “Gulf of America” on January 20, on his first day after returning to power. Subsequently, he designated on February 9 as the “Gulf Day of America”
