Julio César Chávez Jr. is not a central piece of the Sinaloa cartel. Moreover, in the United States they waited for two years to make an order of capture, issued in Mexico, and that because the visa was defeated.
If they consider that it has relevant information, they would keep it in custody or allow it to negotiate a favorable treatment making it a collaborating witness.
Very different case is that of Ovid Guzmán López, who has already established a scheme of agreement and therefore will provide relevant data on his criminal activities and those of his group.
Chávez Jr. is an example and a message, that security agencies, DEA and ICE took another step in a strategy that will not be permissive with criminals, but that will keep the propaganda tools with which they usually press their Mexican counterparts.
In that same scheme, the sanctions of the Office for the Control of Financial Crimes of the Department of Treasury against the Cibanco, Interm and the Vector Bolsa House can be included. Explicit jurisdictions in the complicities of money laundering and payments to buy fentanyl precursors in China.
The arrest and exhibition of the operation against the son of Julio César Chávez González, one of the boxing glories, is at the same time a reminder that the extensions of the war against the Sinaloa cartel will not remain in the toughest nuclei and that it can reach relatives; Chávez Jr. is married to Frida Muñoz Román, who was the wife of Edgar Guzmán López, the son of Joaquín El Chapo Guzmán, killed in 2008.
Chávez Jr. himself said, at the time, that his stepdaughter’s uncle, Ovid Guzmán, “is a good person.”
Somehow it is a blow to the private life of the Sinaloense cartel itself, because it has all the elements to make a story attractive, since there are bandits and celebrities, loves and deaths.
Its legal derivations and consequences are already something else, because we will have to wait to know if there is actually a solid investigation against Chávez Jr. and, more relevant, if this can lead to a condemnation in the future.
The criminal density is deep, hence the schemes of complicity with the criminal gangs can reach sectors that have lived and negotiated with them, but that until now had not been achieved by the arm of the law.
