The musical sensation ‘K-Pop Demon Hunters’ (‘The K-pop Warriors’) has achieved three nominations at the Golden Globes that have left out the acclaimed fifth and final season of ‘Stranger Things’
The K-pop phenomenon expanded its legend and will compete in the categories of best animated film, cinematographic and box office achievement and original song, for ‘Golden’.
It is the first Korean-American song to receive recognition from the Golden Globes, considered the prelude to the Oscars, in the original song category.
It will thus compete with ‘Dream as One’, the song performed by the American star Miley Cyrus for the third installment of ‘Avatar; as well as ‘I Lied to You’, from ‘Sinners’; ‘No Place Like Home’ and ‘The Girl in the Bubble’, from the musical ‘Wicked: For Good’, as well as ‘Train Dreams’, title of the film of the same name.
Since its premiere on June 20, the project directed by Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans has not stopped gaining followers on Netflix – although it has also been released in theaters in the United States and Asia -, breaking records and consolidating K-pop as a global cultural phenomenon that goes far beyond music.
The film about a K-pop girl group that chases mythical demons became the most viewed film on the online content platform last August with 236 million views, according to Netflix data.
The song ‘Golden’ surpassed 100 million weekly streams worldwide for the first time, according to Billboard.
One of the curiosities of some nominations for the Golden Globes in which it was striking that the long-awaited final season of ‘Stranger Things’ did not receive any nominations in the series categories. The Duffer brothers’ project submitted the first four episodes for scrutiny for these awards since the entire season has not yet been broadcast, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The Golden Globes leave other surprises such as Jacob Elordi’s double nomination for best supporting actor for ‘Frankenstein’, by Mexican Guillermo del Toro; as well as best male performer in a miniseries for ‘The Narrow Road to the Deep North’.
Matthew Rhys will fight for this same award for ‘The Beast in Me’, partner of Keri Russel, also nominated for best actress for the acclaimed series ‘The Diplomat’.
Among the specialized press, it is surprising that box office hits such as ‘Wicked: For Good’, the musical by Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, or ‘Jay Kelly’, starring George Clooney, are not among the best film candidates.
Also left out of the 83rd edition of these awards, whose awards will be announced on January 11 in Los Angeles, was the American actress Sydney Sweeney.
Complete list of Golden Globes nominees
‘One Battle After Another’, by Paul Thomas Anderson, leads the Golden Globe nominations in the film category, with nine nominations, while on television ‘The White Lotus’ is the dominant one, with six.
These are the nominees in the main film categories for the 83rd Golden Globes, which will be held on January 11 in Los Angeles:
