Mexico has half of its TMEC renegociators team, so it is necessary to increase the number of lawyers and economists to face the most important commercial challenge in recent years and in the midst of a tariff war unleashed by Donald Trump, according to Kenneth Smith Ramos, former head of the treaty negotiation.

“The negotiating team of the Ministry of Economy (SE) is very good, but it is important to underpin it with a budget, with places and strengthen the offices of the agency abroad,” said the agon firm.

“For this exercise that comes from the review of the TMEC and other objectives of Mexico’s commercial policy it would be important and beneficial that the Government will provide more places to the Ministry of Economy,” said the economist in a Coparmex forum.

Personnel are also needed in other international areas that actively participate in negotiations such as the Ministry of Labor, the Ministry of the Environment, the Ministry of Finance and Ministry of Agriculture, he recalled.

“From an universe of 80 negotiators in the six -year term of Andrés Manuel López Obrador, half went and they have returned 20 percent today we are 50 percent of the capacity in terms of human resources, which is a very solid and robust team,” he said.

“For the task that is coming, it is important that the Congress of the Union allocates public resource to strengthen and give more places to the Ministry of Economy,” he said.

He added that the economy negotiating team is very good and has the best experience, and that there are people who participated in the TMEC negotiations, the Pacific Alliance, the Transpacific Agreement and the Tlcuem.

“Because of the six -year political bogas and because I do not like, we forget that there is a much more important entity that is the United Mexican States,” said Alejandro Valenzuela, general director of Banco Azteca.

“There are many committed people, who want Mexico to go ahead and are people with a vocation. Many of the public officials saw the public sector as an apostolate and how to take the country to a better,” he added.

Jorge Suarez Velez, an expert from the financial sector, described as unfortunate the dismantling of key government areas in commercial and economic relations.

“When the NAFTA was negotiated, I met a guy who had been negotiating in Canada, who said that when I saw Luis de la Calle, Jaime Zabludovsky, Herminio Blanco and Jaime Serra, they started sweating cold,” he said.

“These cuates are great and prepared and it is difficult to negotiate with it, why we do not take advantage of these people and continue there. All those experts are not used, despite the revision of the TMEC, the most important trade agreement for the Mexican economy,” he concluded.
