The Carnival of Rio de Janeiro officially began this Friday with the delivery of the keys of the city to King Momo, maximum sovereign of the most iconic party in Brazil and decreed five days of revelry without limits.
The Carioca monarch received the keys from the mayor of Rio, Eduardo Paes, in a symbolic ceremony in the city’s palace, which was loaded with Samba, color and joy, in the preamble of the party that will run until next Tuesday.
“Here I deliver the keys to whom Rio de Janeiro is going to direct until Ash Wednesday: do not look for me, look for King Momo, to decree open the greatest of all celebrations, the Carioca Carnival,” said the mayor during the act.
The regent, upon receiving his new responsibility, promised to “not lose the key” and anticipated that this will be the best year of the iconic party, said: “The Carnival of Rio 2025 is open.”
The act began animated by a couple of dives dancing to the rhythm of ‘Cidade Maravilhosa’, a carnival song that is the official anthem of Rio de Janeiro, and then introduced several of the most representative characters of the Samba schools.
The legendary flags, dancers moving to the frantic rhythm of the samba and the traditional bahianas with their wide skirts gave joy and color to the ceremony accompanied by the battery, the percussion orchestra that is considered the soul and heart of the Samba schools.

Fiesta everywhere In Rio de Janeiro
Although the carnival officially began this Friday, the party began a month ago with the street comparsas that roam through different parts of the city.
In addition to the street party, which is free and opens the rumbera day from the early hours of the day, the public can delight at night from Saturday to Monday with the majesty of the parades in the Sambódromo, where Samba schools will take shine and color to the catwalk that rises on Sapucaí Avenue.
For more cariocas and tourists, they can enjoy the one who is known as the biggest open -pit show in the world, as of this year the parades of the sambódromo will extend three days, one more day than usual.
During the Carnival days there will also be a varied offer of particular theme parties, as well as popular dancers located in different corners of the city.
