New York, (EFE) .- The nickname ‘King of Hot Dog’, Joey Chestnut, devoured this Friday 70 units of this typical American meal in 10 minutes and recovered his champion status in his expected return to the traditional contest of Nathan’s Glotones, in New York, of July 4.
Chestnut, 41, was treated as a sports star upon arrival at the establishment of Nathan’s, located on the Rabo Island beach, where for 16 years he has held the “mustard belt” until in 2024 he was vetoed by a collaboration with a vegan brand.
Glotería competitions are typical in the United States and are even considered a “sport”, with their own league called Major League of Eating (MLE) and retransmission of competitions such as Nathan’s, which has been held for more than a century, in specialized channels, such as ESPN.
Chestnut is the world leader in the ‘Hot Dog’ category since 2021, when he devoured 76 in 10 minutes, but this year he sprayed that brand in a special Netflix program, not subject to regulations, in which he swallowed 83 in that same period of time.
His fans, who received it today with shouts and posters, had to ‘settle’ to see him swallow 70 hot and a half dogs, a task he diligently performed without interruptions (one year, he faced an activist while ate), and in which he surpassed about 14 opponents.
In a message in X days before the celebration, Chestnut said that Nathan’s is “the only Hot Dogs company” with which he works and declared himself happy to return to the New York contest that has given him fame and money, after what he described as “interpretation differences.”
“Although I have collaborated and I still do it with a variety of companies, including some based on plants, those relationships never supposed a conflict with my love for hot dogs,” said the competitor, referring to his association with the Vegan impossible vegan brand Foods.
Last year’s winner, Patrick Bertoletti, who ate 46 and a half dogs today, sportsly accepted his defeat against the eminence: “I never thought I would win the Nathan’s contest, but he did not feel complete without Joey, so this year he has returned he is better,” he told the media.
The female champion, Miki Sudo, who became last year the first woman capable of swallowing 50 hot dogs in 10 minutes, today stayed in 33 and, although she revalidated her title, she regretted “disappointing fans.”
Chestnut, also known as ‘jaws’ (jaws) is more than the ‘King of Hot Dog’: according to the Mle League, he accumulates milestones in half a hundred food disciplines, such as croquettes (185 in 8 minutes), the tacos (126 in 8 minutes) and apple cakes (more than 4 in 8 minutes).
In today’s contest, 10,000 dollars have been pocketed, but apart from the metallic award it earns a great useful visibility to achieve lucrative advertising contracts: where appropriate, it earns about 500,000 dollars a year thanks to gluttony, according to specialized media.
