The shortage of fuels on the southern border of Mexico due to the lack of payments to suppliers of Mexican Petroleum (Pemex) was exacerbated on Monday by a blockade of retirees to a parastatal terminal in Puerto Chiapas in the face of absences in their medical services.

The protesters demanded medical attention and supply of medicines, while in the region closed gas stations, rationing at 20 liters per vehicle and long lines are reported, according to testimonies collected in the place.

The people who protest, who say they integrate a group of 425 retirees and represent about 180 families, prevented self -tan access to the Pemex installation and warned that, if there is no response, they will climb to an indefinite strike from Thursday.

In parallel, motorists began panic purchases before the notice of possible missing, while some gas stations stopped selling and others restricted the load to administer the available inventory.

According to retirees, the conflict originates in the absence of medical and medication services for seven months, as well as in problems with the hospital that, they say, have been crawling for thirteen months.

To this are the lack of payment to suppliers of pipes hired for the distribution of fuel, which, they said, has reduced the number of units in operation and would have caused shortage in adjacent municipalities with Guatemala.

The closures and rations affected drivers who formed rows for hours to stock up.

In tapachula stations and surrounding areas, consulted users indicated that the duration of the contingency is unknown and that they have not received official information about supply standardization times.

Noah Damián Aragón, Pemex’s retiree, denounced that they have not been careful, medical and medicines for months, so they are only asking for what corresponds to them peacefully.

“What we ask is that the president or the director of Pemex take us into account and do not forget, because we have left almost our life here, I worked 37 years with them and until today we are seeing these types of problems, we are asking for the reactivation (of the services),” he said.

Manuel de Jesús Morales, another Pemex worker, stressed that shortage is not a consequence of his protest, because he began before for the absence of payments to service providers who have the autotanques for their distribution.

The citizen Juan Carlos Ruiz said that, like many others, he waited “almost two and a half hours” to load fuel and, although he said he does not know the reason for the long lines, he asked the authorities to address the problem “because it is quite strong”, while the authorities do not answer them.

The retirees extended blankets and cards, demanding medical consultations, medications, 100 %medical care, meanwhile, drivers reported that only “five units” would be in cast, due to the lack of payments to the autotanque supplier on the Mexican border shared with Guatemala.

On August 5, the Government of Mexico announced the creation of an exclusive financial vehicle for Petróleos Mexicanos (Pemex) of up to 250 million pesos (more than 13 million dollars) that will be allocated to strategic projects of the state oil company and payment to suppliers during 2025.

This instrument will be backed by a guarantee of the federal government and will have resources from both the development bank and commercial banking.

Before, the Mexican government also issued precapitalized notes for $ 12 million, with the purpose of strengthening the finances of the parastatal.
