Latin civil groups accused the Republicans on Thursday in Texas of “kidnapping democracy” and “eroding” the Hispanic vote with their plan to redraw the electoral map in the state to create five districts of the Federal Congress that would favor President Donald Trump’s party.

The main Hispanic organizations in the country condemned the proposal that on Wednesday revealed the Texas Republican Party, where there are 6.5 million Latinos with the right to vote, almost a third of the state total, indicate data from the Pew Research Center.

“This map is nothing less than the kidnapping of democracy with the naked eye,” said Roman Palomares, president of the United Latin American Citizens League (LULAC), in a pronouncement.

Lulac considered a “shameless and unprecedented attempt to undermine democracy by diluting power Latin voters” the proposal, promoted by Trump to give Republicans an advantage over the Democrats in the legislative elections of mid -term of 2026.

Trump seeks to maintain and expand its majority in the House of Representatives (220-212), so the national press published that the president is pressing the Republicans so that, in the states where possible, they redraw the electoral map to create districts that favor the right.

New electoral map could give more control to Republicans in Texas

The Latin Voto Association warned of Texas’s precedent, as the initiative is promoting in a special session of the Tejano Legislative, convened by Governor Greg Abbott in the middle of summer and ahead of time, since the redesign of the electoral maps at the national level is usually done every 10 years after the census.

“These racially drawn maps are designed to hurt and erode Latinos, the largest demographic and fastest growth in Texas. From the beginning, Texas Republicans operated without transparency,” said this group in a pronouncement.

The new scheme threatens districts now represented by Democrats, such as Henry Cuéllar and Vicente González, in southern Texas, and that of progressive Greg Casar, in the center of the State.

In this way, Republicans could control 30 of the 38 federal seats that correspond to Texas in the House of Representatives, compared to the current 25.

The Democratic Party also accused the map of “being designed to represent Donald Trump, not the voices of Texas.”

“It is illegally drawn in a way in which silence the voices of the minority communities throughout Texas. When Donald Trump knows that he cannot win, he cheats,” said the leader of the Democrats in the state, Kendall Scudder.
