The Chamber of Deputies and the Senate expressed their support for President Claudia Sheinbaum, who this Tuesday reacted with a public letter to the tariff threats of the president-elect of the United States, Donald Trump.
“I want to take advantage of the moment to express to the president, on behalf of the parliamentary group of the majority of this House, of the legislative majority, our full support for her attitude, her decision, her firmness with which she is leading the country” said deputy Ricardo Monreal Ávila, president of the Political Coordination Board (Jucopo) and coordinator of Morena.
In his morning conference, Sheinbaum read the letter he will send to Trump, who on Monday announced that one of his first executive orders will be to impose 25% tariffs on “all products” from Mexico and Canada, until the invasion “stops” of illegal migrants and drugs, particularly fentanyl.
“President Trump, it is not with threats or tariffs that the immigration phenomenon or drug consumption in the United States will be addressed. Cooperation and reciprocal economic understanding are required to address these great challenges. To a tariff, another will come in response and so on until we put common companies at risk,” he explained.
The letter has received the support of the majority of legislators, who expressed their support for “any government or against any threat or interference,” as they have also wanted to emphasize from the Upper House.

“From the Senate of the Republic we support the call made by President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo to President-elect Donald Trump to withdraw any threat of economic sanctions and to build, through dialogue and agreement, the necessary policies to combat all types of difficulties that arise between the nations,” stated the president of the board of directors, Fernando Noroña.
Noroña reviewed the reasons that lead him to support the president’s response, among which he highlighted the origin of the migrants trying to cross to the United States who are not originally from Mexico, and the 75% reduction in this migratory flow during the last year, as well as the arms trafficking that enters Mexican lands from the northern border.
“Mexico has insisted on promoting employment and development in Latin America to address the root causes that generate the migration phenomenon to the United States of America of human beings in search of opportunities to cover their basic needs,” defended the senator.
