The NBA player LeBron James received a barrage of criticism on social networks on Tuesday to insinuate that he would make a great announcement about his future that turned out to be an advertising campaign for an alcoholic beverage brand.
On Monday, unexpectedly, James posted on his social networks that he would make an ad, which labeled as “the decision of all decisions”, this Tuesday at 4:00 p.m. GMT.
The message originated all kinds of conjectures in the media and fans, especially around a possible announcement of his retirement from the courts: James is 40 years old and has 22 seasons in the NBA.
But to the astonishment of their own and strangers, the supposed transcendental decision remained in an advertising trick of an alcoholic beverage brand.
The “revelation” was hard criticized by the followers in the same social network that LeBron used to create false expectations.
Many began to associate James with alcoholism and others questioned their role as a model among the youngest to promote an alcoholic beverage early in the morning in the United States.
“Why are you promoting alcohol in our community? He has not done any good, but I’m sure you don’t care, because they are paying you, right?” Said one of the fans.
“A shabby announcement? Son of a bitch,” said another of the users of the social network X while another joked: “I divorced my wife, I renounced my work, I moved to Los Angeles and bought a seasonal pass for this?”
Another said: “There were young children in my son’s school this morning talking about this. They will be so disenchanted to know that it was only an advertising announcement of something for which they are too young.”
LeBron’s motivation to create false expectations among his fans and announce alcohol is not clear.
In the last five seasons, the player has entered 221 million dollars in salary. The advertising agreements are joined to that figure. In 2024, Forbes estimated that LeBron James won another 80 million dollars in sponsorships.
Throughout his career, the same publication estimates that LeBron James has earned about 900 million dollars between sponsorships, business investments and other initiatives.
