The Catholic Church urged the entire population this Sunday to make 2025 “a year of hope”, without weapons or divisions, amid the growing wave of violence affecting the country.
“We invite all social actors, government, businessmen, citizens, academics, religious communities, people who believe and do not believe in God, to build a year of hope in 2025. “Mexico needs it and deserves it,” the organization noted in its Sunday opinion column Desde la Fe.
In its last editorial of 2024, the Catholic Church urged “that weapons be silenced, that divisions be put to an end and that we be artisans of peace and builders of hope.”
Likewise, he called to give the country “a hope that does not disappoint,” that “is not based on false promises, on the attack on those who think differently,” or “that is based on corruption or individual growth.”

He noted that the beginning of the Catholic “Jubilee Year” coincides with the New Year celebrations, which he considered “an enormous opportunity for a society hurt by the wounds of violence, depression, marginalization and multiple realities that we live.”
“The opening of the cathedral doors reminds us that the heart of Jesus is always open to everyone, absolutely to everyone, to those who feel alone, to those who think they no longer have forgiveness, to those who have done wrong,” he noted. .
Likewise, “for those who seek solace, for those who have suffered violence, for those who desperately search for a loved one, for migrants, for closed hearts, for children, young people, adults and the elderly,” the organization added.
Mexico is going through a wave of violence with 27,794 intentional homicides in the first 11 months of 2024, an average of 83 murders per day, which represents an increase of 1.47% annually compared to the 27,391 victims in the same period of 2023, according to the most recent data of the Executive Secretariat of the National Public Security System (SESNSP).
In November, the second month of President Claudia Sheinbaum’s government, 2,461 homicides were recorded in the country, an increase of 4.7% compared to the 2,351 victims in the same month of 2023.
During the six-year term of former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, Mexico experienced unprecedented violence, with a record of more than 196,000 murders, according to the civil organization Causa en Común, based on official figures.
