The theft of insured cars in Mexico had a 2% decrease in the last 12 months to June, although the recovery of units also decreased to its lowest level in five years, according to data from the Mexican Association of Insurance Institutions (AMIS).

In the last year, 60,625 cars robberies with insurance were reported, while in the previous period the
Figure was 62,009 units, which threw an average of 166 vehicles stolen per day, detailed in a statement.

The Amis, which represents 84 companies, explained that the number of recovered cars fell to 42%, an average of 70 vehicles per day.

In the case of the heavy team, theft drops 1% to 9,473, compared to 9,548 units of the previous year. In this type of vehicles the recovery remained at 57%.

“This decline in vehicle theft is a positive signal, which should not only be maintained, but must continue to decrease in the short and long term. This decrease is favorable because the theft of vehicles is associated with the commission of other high -impact crimes, both patrimonial and in health,” said the general director of the organization, Norma Alicia Rosas, according to the statement.

“This strategy must continue to accompany other actions, such as the modernization of the Public Vehicle Registry, which is part of the federal government security strategy,” he added.

By entity, the State of Mexico heads the number of robberies with 15,209 reports, followed by Jalisco, with 7,139, and Mexico City, with 5.550. These entities have reported progressive reductions in the incidence of this crime since 2020, with reductions of 23%, 34%and 29%, respectively.

“When we analyze vehicle theft by entity, we can refer that the strategies of the authorities, which have been applied in a coordinated manner in the metropolitan areas, have yielded positive results to combat this crime,” said Rosas.

Initiative to prevent accidents

As part of the actions to promote road safety in Mexico, the AMIS launched the pilot phase of the Analytical Observatory of Sinister with Insurance, a tool with which it seeks to exchange data such as GPS and another data on claims with authorities and citizenship.

“The objective behind this system is to contribute to reduce and prevent road accidents, through the analysis of these data that will be available one day after the incident is reported. The analysis of this information will allow the key actors of society to suggest actions that help reduce the number of road victims,” said Rosas.
