Río de Janeiro, (EFE) .- The president of Brazil, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, and his Mexican counterpart, Claudia Sheinbaum, reaffirmed their interest in “deepening” economic and commercial ties between their countries after the announcement of tariffs by Donald Trump’s government, official sources reported.

According to a statement from the Brazilian presidency, Lula highlighted the importance of strengthening bilateral trade for “the uncertainty that is currently living,” in a clear reference to Trump’s measures, although not directly mentioning the issue.

In that sense, the leaders agreed in a dialogue by telephone to visit Mexico of a delegation of Brazilian businessmen and ministers headed by the Brazilian vice president, Geraldo Alckmin, on August 27 and 28.

As part of the agenda of that visit, Lula proposed to initiate negotiations to expand the commercial agreement between Brazil and Mexico, with the aim of increasing commercial flows between the two countries.

Among the strategic areas mentioned by the heads of state for that possible agreement, Lula and Sheinbaum highlighted the sectors of the pharmaceutical and agricultural industry, as well as those of ethanol, biodiesel and aerospace, among others.

At the beginning of July, the US president announced 50 % tariffs for tariff Brazilian products that will take effect on August 1.

Trump justified the measure as a reaction to the “hunting for the witches” suffered by former president Jair Bolsonaro (2019-2022) and conditioned his uprising to the suspension of the process against the ultra-rightist leader.

Bolsonaro currently responds to a trial accused of leading the conspiracy that tried to overthrow the government of Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.

For Mexico, Trump announced 30 % tariffs for imports of Mexican products, to prevent drug posters from that country to operate with freedom and impunity in the US.
