“I think he will not come here because he does not want commitment,” Lula said in an act in Belém, after referring to Trump’s decision to take out the American nation from the Paris Agreement, signed in 2015 with the aim of limiting Global warming less than two degrees.
The Brazilian president said that, in the face of “irresponsible attitudes” such as Trump, his government is committed to the fight against climate change, after a succession of extreme weather episodes in Brazil, from historical droughts in the Amazon to unpublished floods in the southern country.

“Who wants commitment is we, who believe in science, who are afraid that it is raining much more than before, that the fires are excessive …” he said.
Lula also visited the works of the Convention Center where the COP will be held, whose built area will occupy 500,000 square meters and have an advance of 74%.
The Brazilian government is also financing the construction of nine drainage channels with almost 10 kilometers of extension to benefit the peripheral areas of this Amazon city that suffers from frequent floods during the rainy season.
The president said that the transformation of Barcelona in the framework of the 1992 Olympic Games inspired him to choose Belém, who had never housed an event of this magnitude, as the headquarters of the summit.
