The Brazilian president, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, congratulated Donald Trump this Wednesday after his victory in the United States presidential elections and, through his X profile, stated in Portuguese that “democracy is the voice of the people and must always be respected.”
Furthermore, he added that “the world needs dialogue and joint work” in pursuit of “peace, development and prosperity.”
“Good luck and success to the new government,” he wrote.
Last Friday Lula had stated that the best thing for democracy was for the Democratic candidate, Kamala Harris, to win the United States elections.
In an interview he gave to French television TF1, the Brazilian progressive leader clarified that a Harris victory was “much safer to strengthen democracy in the United States” and recalled when Trump incited his followers to reject the result when he was defeated by Joe Biden in 2020, which led to the attack on the Capitol.
“We already saw what President Trump was at the end of his term… that attack on the Capitol. Something that no one thought could happen in the United States because they presented themselves to the world as the model of democracy. “That model fell apart,” he said.
