The president of Brazil, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, said Wednesday that it is “unacceptable the interference” of the United States government in the Brazilian justice, after the new sanction imposed on the judge of the Supreme Court that carries the cases of the ex -president Jair Bolsonaro.

“One of the foundations of democracy and respect for human rights in Brazil is the independence of the Judiciary, and any attempt to weaken it constitutes a threat to the democratic regime itself. Justice is not negotiated,” said the president in a note entitled ‘Brazil is a sovereign and democratic country’.

The administration of President Donald Trump applied to the Judge of the Brazilian Supreme Alexandre de Moraes on Wednesday, this law authorizes the government to sanction foreign citizens involved in acts of corruption or violations of human rights.

In practice it is a financial sanction, since it blocks the possible assets and properties of the magistrate in the US. And prohibits US citizens to carry out any transaction with them.

De Moraes is the investigating judge of open processes against Bolsonaro, including one for “leading” a coup plot against Lula, after losing the 2022 elections, according to the Prosecutor’s Office.

Lula solidarity with the judge and pointed out that the sanctions are motivated “by the action of Brazilian politicians who betray” the country “in defense of their own interests”, in reference to deputy Eduardo Bolsonaro, one of the children of the ultra -right -wing leader and who is in the US in search of sanctions to help his father.

“In Brazil, the law applies to all citizens and all companies. Any activity that affects the life of the Brazilian population and democracy is subject to norms,” said the head of state.

Trump also signed on Wednesday the executive order that establishes a 50% tariff for a good part of Brazilian imports. The Republican leader justified that sanction as a retaliation to the trial faced by Bolsonaro by coup.

At that point, Lula considered “unjustifiable the use of political arguments to validate” the tariff.

“The political motivation of the measures against Brazil threatens national sovereignty and against the historical relationship between the two countries,” said the ruler, while recalling the surplus that has accumulated in recent years.

However, he reiterated that his country “is still willing to negotiate commercial aspects”, without giving up the defense instruments provided for in their legislation, which they plan to respond with reciprocity.

Lula also reported that he is evaluating the impacts of the tariff and the possible actions he will take “to support and protect the Brazilian workers, companies and families.”

The Brazilian industry asks Lula to negotiate and not respond to Trump’s tariff

The National Confederation of the Industry (CNI) of Brazil, the main representative of the sector, asked the government of President Luiz Inacio Lula Da Silva on Wednesday to “negotiate” and do not take retaliation measures, before the 50% tariff imposed by the US to a large part of the imports of the South American country.

The employer expressed in a statement her “great concern” about the decision, but said that “it is not time to respond” and that the country must “expand the dialogue channels” with President Donald Trump’s executive.

“We continue to defend the negotiation as a way of convincing the US government that this measure is a loss-notice relationship for the two countries,” said the president of the association, Ricardo Alban, in statements cited in the document.

In addition, the employer defended that the Government throws a series of measures to support the companies affected by the tariff.

Among the proposed actions is the creation by the Bank for the Development of the Brazilian State of a special financing line with annual interest rates of between 1% and 4%, as well as the postponement for 120 days of the payment of all federal taxes.

Alban said that the measures seek to “preserve the export capacity” of companies and “guarantee the continuity of international operations in a scenario of great unpredictability.”

At the same time, the employer prepares a business mission to the US to “sensitize” the authorities on the negative impact of the tariff.
