Foreign Minister Juan Ramón de la Fuente and the new Secretary of State of the United States, Marco Rubio, addressed this Tuesday, in their first telephone conversation, “immigration and security issues,” as revealed today by the president, Claudia Sheinbaum.

“I want to inform you that yesterday the Foreign Minister, Juan Ramón de la Fuente, spoke by phone with the Secretary of State, Rubio; The conversations have already started, it was a very good conversation, very cordial,” the president reported in her morning press conference.

The talk, Sheinbaum explained, took place after the president of the United States, Donald Trump, signed executive orders (decrees) that directly affect the interests of Mexico, such as the declaration of emergency on the border, the designation of terrorist organizations as the drug cartels and the reinstatement of the ‘Stay in Mexico’ program.

Sheinbaum did not detail the conclusions of the call, but noted that “from there a process of talks (conversations) between both governments begins.”

In addition, he rejected criticism from opponents, who demanded that he begin dialogue with Trump’s team earlier, as did the outgoing Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau, who visited him at Mar-A-Lago in Florida last year after the threat of imposing 25% tariffs on Mexican and Canadian products.

“This is important information for everyone to know, given this idea that there is no communication, it was formally established yesterday. It is the first call from Secretary of State Marco Rubio, the first one he made was to Mexico, and it was a very cordial call,” he highlighted.

On the other hand, the president stated “that care centers on the border are already being installed” to receive Mexicans deported from the United States.

In the country, the mass deportations promised by Trump are worrying because Mexicans are close to half of the 11 million undocumented immigrants in the United States and their remittances represent almost 4% of Mexico’s gross domestic product (GDP), which in 2024 it would have received. an estimated record of $65 billion.

In this sense, he rejected reports from the national press about the alleged increase in arrivals of deportees to the northern border of Mexico by stating that “yesterday there were fewer receptions of Mexicans than in previous days.”

“We are going to support our brothers and sisters who return. ‘Mexico embraces you’ is the program (to serve them) and here in Mexico they will always be received with open arms and, furthermore, Mexico is experiencing a stellar moment,” he said.
