The US Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, clarified this Sunday that his country will manage the “direction” in which Venezuela will move without the leadership of Nicolás Maduro, a day after the capture of the Venezuelan and President Donald Trump’s statements that Washington would govern the South American nation until there is a transition.

Asked in an interview with ABC News about the authority of the US Government over another sovereign country, Rubio specified that what they would seek is to direct the situation in Venezuela, for which they have a margin of pressure with the blockade imposed by Trump on oil tankers that transport Venezuelan crude oil.

“What we are managing is the direction this will take in the future. And for this, we have influence,” said the head of US diplomacy, one of the key figures in Washington’s efforts to remove Maduro from power.

The US seeks to ensure that Venezuela redounds to the national interest

The Secretary of State insisted that sanctioned tankers heading to Venezuela will be “seized, either upon entry or exit, with a court order that we will obtain from judges in the United States,” in reference to the pressure tactic that Washington used against Caracas in recent weeks.

Rubio previously specified to NBC News that they want “Venezuela to move in a certain direction” that is “good for the people of Venezuela, but also in the national interest” of the United States.

He stated that he hopes that the new Venezuelan Government, now led by the vice president and now acting president, Delcy Rodríguez, “will take a different course than Maduro.”

“Until Venezuela addresses the problems it had under the Maduro government, which still persist, it will continue to face pressure from the US,” he said.

The Venezuelan ruler was arrested in the early hours of this Saturday in a lightning operation by Washington dubbed “Absolute Resolution” along with the Venezuelan first lady, Cilia Flores, and then transferred to New York, where he faces charges for drug trafficking and corruption.
