The Secretary of State of the United States, Marco Rubio, warned Thursday that his country will respond to the conviction against the Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro for trying to reverse the democratic order, a ruling that he described as “witch hunt.”
“The political persecution led by (magistrate) Alexandre de Moraes continues, sanctioned for violating human rights, after he and other members of the Supreme Court of Brazil decided to unfairly decided to imprison former President Jair Bolsonaro,” Rubio denounced after knowing the conviction.
“The United States will respond accordingly to this witch hunt,” he added without offering more details.
Previously, in statements to the press, the president of the United States, Donald Trump, declared himself “surprised” by the conviction and defended Bolsonaro, one of his allies abroad, as a “good man.”

Trump imposed a 50% tariff on most Brazilian products exported to the United States in retaliation for the process against Bolsonaro, a measure rejected by the Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva government.
The US administration also sanctioned and prohibited Judge Alexandre de Moraes, an instructor of the Bolsonaro case, whom he accuses of carrying out a “witch hunt”.
Bolsonaro was sentenced this Thursday by the Supreme Court to 27 years and three months in jail for having conspired against the democratic order after his defeat in the 2022 elections in front of the current president, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.
The progressive leader was finally invested on January 1, 2023 and, a week later, thousands of ultra -right activists violently assaulted the headquarters of the Presidency, the Parliament and the Supreme Court itself.
