Opposition leader María Corina Machado described this Thursday the release of several Venezuelan political prisoners, announced today by the president of the National Assembly, Jorge Rodríguez, as “an act of moral restitution” in a message to the families of the detainees.

“Receive this moment as an act of moral restitution, as confirmation that your fortitude was not in vain,” Machado recommended to the loved ones of the people who are released from prison, whose identities have not been revealed by the Venezuelan authorities.

Machado recalled that, although “nothing returns the stolen years,” “this day matters because it recognizes what he always” knew: “that injustice is not going to be eternal and that the truth, even very wounded, ends up breaking through.”

Jorge Rodríguez, brother of the acting president of Venezuela, Delcy Rodríguez, announced the “release” of “a significant number of people” as a “unilateral gesture” to “consolidate peace and peaceful coexistence in the country.”

So far, only the identities of five Spanish people have been confirmed through the Spanish Government (José María Basoa, Andrés Martínez Adasme, Miguel Moreno Dapena, Ernesto Gorbe Cardona and the Spanish-Venezuelan Rocío San Miguel), who are already flying to the European country.

“This day gives you a little peace,” Machado celebrated in his message to the prisoners’ families. “You were strength when freedom was lacking, you were dignity when injustice abounded,” he recalled.

The opposition leader also sent a message for the future: “We will not rest until all prisoners are free and that all of Venezuela can embrace itself in full democracy and freedom.”

According to the NGO Foro Penal, in Venezuela there were 863 political prisoners until December 29, the majority detained after the presidential elections of July 28, 2024.

Several organizations and relatives of the detainees have indicated to EFE that the information about the identity of those released has been opaque and has not reached them directly.
