Former Central Banker Mark Carney a crushing victory was awarded on Sunday to lead the Canada Liberal Party and become his next prime minister, which prepares him for a confrontation with the Trump administration.

The members of the Liberal Party bet on Carney as the best positioned man to face the US president Donald Trump, who has threatened an annexation, in addition to launching a commercial war and punishing with tariffs to the long -standing ally. Liberal sources say that Carney will soon summon a general choice.

“The Americans want our resources, our water, our land, our country … if they succeed, they will destroy our way of life,” said Carney in their acceptance speech on Sunday night.

Carney, which supports the dollar retaliation tariffs in response to Trump’s measures, could talk to Trump as soon as Monday.

Carney, who has no political experience, is usually more reserved than Trudeau, which often had a combative relationship with Trump.

The United States will apply on Wednesday a 25% tariff to Canadian steel and aluminum. Ottawa imposed a 25% tariff on US imports worth 30,000 million Canadian dollars when Trump announced his initial tariff plans last month.

“My government will keep our tariffs until Americans show us respect,” said Carney on Sunday.

Trump’s measure triggered a furious reaction in Canada, where the provinces withdrew the American shelves and urged people to buy Canadian products.

Ontario, the most populous of the 10 provinces, plans to announce on Monday that it will impose a 25% surcharge to electricity exports to New York, Michigan and Minnesota.

Carney prepares for Canadian elections as well as for a commercial war with the US

Carney won with 86% of the votes cast by the party members. The general governor, the representative of King Carlos of Great Britain in Canada, will soon invite him to form a government and formally replace Justin Trudeau as prime minister.

The Globe and Mail newspaper said the official delivery could take place on Thursday or Friday.

The reconstituted liberal government will probably not last long. If Carney does not call elections, his political opponents have said they will defeat the government at the first opportunity they have when Parliament meets again at the end of March.

For months, opposition conservatives led the surveys, often with a two -digit advantage over rulers.

However, the political panorama changed with Trump’s return to the White House, the perspective of tariffs and the threat of annexation. This coincided with an increase in support to the liberals, who have taken advantage of a wave of renewed national unity to reach elbow with the opposition party, according to the latest surveys.

Now the challenge will be to maintain that impulse and convince Canadians to give another opportunity to a party that spent a decade in power under the command of Trudeau, while fighting a commercial war on multiple fronts.

“Without exaggeration, the challenges are almost unique in Canadian history, if not unique in the postwar period,” said Cameron Anderson, a politics professor at Western University.

Carney will be the first person to become Prime Minister of Canada without previous experience in electoral policy. The former governor of the Bank of Canada and the Bank of England was placed at the head of the race for liberal leadership, ahead of two women who held positions in the Trudeau cabinet.

Carney promised to eliminate an unpopular consumption tax on carbon, stop a planned increase in capital gains tax and promised to eliminate barriers to trade within Canada. He promised to double the rhythm of construction of new homes in 10 years and limit immigration levels, a policy change initiated by Trudeau in response to a negative reaction due to the shortage of housing and high prices.

The liberals tried to compare the conservative leader Pierre Poilievre with Trump in a recent announcement. Pailievre, in turn, intensified attacks on Carney on Sunday.
