Mass shootings in the United States have decreased this year, as have the number of deaths and associated injuries, but more than five people, on average, are still injured per day in shooting incidents across the country.
Key data
Nationwide, 393 mass shootings have been reported as of Dec. 16, a 20% decrease from the 491 shootings reported in the same period last year and a 41% decrease from a peak of 669 in 2021, according to the Gun Violence Archive, which defines a mass shooting as an incident in which four or more people are injured or killed, not including the shooter.
The year so far has seen the lowest rate of mass shootings since 2019, when 392 incidents were recorded, and deaths are at their lowest level in seven years.
A total of 348 people have died in mass shootings in 2025, the lowest number so far this year since 336 people were killed in 2018.
Injuries are at the lowest level since 2019, at 1,786 so far this year, meaning that, on average, five people have been injured in a mass shooting each day this year.
Key background
Police are in their fifth day of searching for a man who shot several people at Brown University on Saturday, killing two and wounding nine others. There have been 30 more deadly shootings in the U.S. this year, including one at a high school homecoming celebration in Leland, Mississippi, that left seven people dead. Texas and California have seen the highest number of mass shootings per state this year, with 35 and 29 each, respectively. There have been 17 mass killings this year, defined as incidents in which four or more people are killed in a 24-hour period, not including the shooter, according to a database maintained by The Associated Press and USA Today in partnership with Northeastern University. That’s the lowest recorded figure since 2006, but experts told PBS News the drop is likely due to a return to more average crime levels after an unusual spike in mass killings in 2018 and 2019, rather than a sign of permanent change.
Crucial ideals
“The year 2025 looks great in historical context, but we can’t pretend that means the problem is gone forever,” James Densley, a professor at Metropolitan Minnesota State University, told PBS.
large number
63: That is the amount of people killed in this year’s 15 deadliest shootings. Seven people died in Leland, Mississippi, and four in each of the next 14 deadliest incidents.
