The price of meat in the United States has reached its historical maximum due to the lack of cattle supply, Alonso Fernández Flores, president of the National Association of Federal Inspection Establishments (Anetif) reported.
“At the time the United States border is opened to Mexican cattle exports, it can be a good step towards recovery of the US market,” said the businessman.

A pound (or 453.6 grams) of ground meat costs $ 6,018 in the United States at the end of May 2025, a record price and maximum in the last decade, according to the Office of Labor Statistics (BLS). In the last five months, the price of meat has risen more than 9.5 percent.
“In the case of beef, what we have seen is that the price to the producer – that is, the one who sells the meat on the channel – has risen approximately 65 percent since the pandemic began, while the price to the final consumer has risen about 40 percent,” said the business representative.
The business leader recalled that much of the increase has been absorbed within the commercial chain, especially by distributors, supermarkets and restaurants.
“It is a sample of how the system has tried to balance the pressure of costs without unprotected to the consumer, although that has pressed the margins of those who are in the middle,” said Alonso Fernández Flores.
Today, TIF certification in all states of the Mexican Republic must be promoted to help fight pests and diseases of food origin, which are very expensive, added within the framework of the fourth International Agrifood Forum, held in Mexicali, Baja California.
The Agrifood International Forum was attended by more than 100 local agricultural producers and countries such as Israel, Arab Emirates, Indonesia, Italy, Costa Rica, Canada, Ivory Coast and Australia.
In its presentation, the TIF system as an agro -industrial development engine in Baja California, Alonso Fernández Flores stressed that this system is based on strict quality controls, safety, traceability and animal welfare and is the passport of the Mexican countryside towards international markets, representing a guarantee of safety and quality in foods that are produced in certified establishments, and is a tool of competitiveness and development of the dearish industry.

“TIF certification is the first requirement to export our meat products, made in Mexico for the world,” he said.
“Today, 80 years after its creation, the TIF seal is synonymous with quality, safety, traceability, animal welfare and now also of sustainability,” said the president of Anetif.
“It is a system that is recognized by the most rigorous countries in safety, including our northern neighbor, the United States, our main market.”
“As of December 2024 we have 441 TIF establishments in Mexico, of which 146 export to 62 countries and 63 percent of the national sacrifice is carried out in TIF plants,” he said.
The president of Anetif reiterated his confidence that very soon the border with the United States is reopened to exports of standing cattle, due to the plague of the borer of livestock, so that in the next visit of an American technical group the measures taken by the Mexican government and can determine the reopening will be evaluated.
“Fortunately, the federal authorities have been working with the United States government, have reached certain agreements, even that the United States would contribute 21 million dollars for a sterile fly plant in the state of Chiapas, which is one of the main tools to eradicate this plague, so we believe they are positive news and that the reopening of the border can be closer than we think,” said Alonso Fernández.
The plague of the cheaning worm of the cattle, he said, does not reach the meat that is consumed, since it only occurs in living tissues, so there must be confidence that it is harmless and hygienic products.
