Argentine forward Lionel Messi, of Inter Miami, was named most valuable player (‘MVP’, in English) of the MLS for the second consecutive year after completing a historic season, as announced this Tuesday by the American league.

Messi will receive the distinction after being proclaimed MLS champion for the first time, although the individual title only takes into account his numbers during the regular season.

The Argentine was the league’s top scorer (golden boot) with 29 goals in 28 games played, in addition to distributing 19 assists.

Messi was elected with 70.43% of the votes, followed by the Danish Anders Dreyer (11.15%), from San Diego, and the Frenchman Denis Bouanga (7.27%), from Los Angeles FC.

He is the first footballer to be elected MLS MVP in consecutive seasons and takes the baton from players such as the Spanish David Villa (2016, New York City) or the Mexican Carlos Vela (2019, Los Angeles FC).

The Colombian Carlos Valderrama was, in 1996, the first MVP of the American League.

Messi, 38 years old and who arrived in MLS in 2023, renewed this year with Inter Miami until the end of the 2028 season.
