Mew Takes Players Back To Ancient Kanto

As consistent as developer Game Freak have been in providing new Pokémon releases over the years, not all of them have been exactly what fans have been looking for, particularly in recent times.

Fortunately, the fans have always been there to fill in the proverbial gaps, bringing out new and exciting takes on classic games that take advantage of modern hardware to provide deep experiences that the original run of games could only dream of at the time.

Between ROM hacks and entirely original creations made in engines like RPG Maker and Unity, there are hundreds of games out there available to try for free. With that in mind, a new one has recently debuted that has an impressive premise, and a bright future, and even better it’s available to try right now.

Pokémon Legends: Mew Is By Fans, For Fans

Over on Itch.io, you should be able to find the download page for Pokémon Legends: Mew, with the 0.1.1 version now available for Windows and Android. If you do decide to go and give it a go right now, you can play through the entire prologue, trying out some of the mechanics and catching Pokémon in the open portion of the map.

The latest version dropped in February and it worked out some of the early bugs and kinks that the community identified, so it’s in decent shape, with active development still ongoing and more updates promised in relatively short order.

The game allows players to head back to ancient Kanto, combining a relatively modern open world approach, with a fresh take on the Gen I graphics and Pokédex. Kanto, as well as many of the Pokémon within it, have also been reimagined to reflect the earlier time period, so whilst it will be recognizable, it should be fresh at the same time.

Given how early it is in development, it’s shocking how good the game looks right now, and if the developer can continue to build on the solid early foundations, then it could easily be a firm fan favorite for years to come.

Kanto Will Always Have A Special Place In The Hearts Of Pokémon Fans

Going back to Kanto is always going to be a popular choice with Pokémon fans and seeing it in this new form is a great way of delivering something a little different without losing the obvious nostalgia that comes with the setting.

As Pokémon fan games go, this is a really exciting project, so make sure to keep up with its progress as development moves forward over the next year.
