General Ramón Guardado Sánchez will make history as the first Mexican to be Head of Mission and Chief of Military Observers of the United Nations, as he will command UN peacekeeping operations in the Himalayan mountains, the organization reported this Wednesday in a statement.
“Originally from Veracruz, Mexico, Brigadier General Ramón Guardado Sánchez never imagined that one day he would be selected to command a UN peacekeeping operation in the shadows of the snow-capped Himalayan mountains, half a world away,” the entity specified in the document.
According to the information, Guardado Sánchez is Head of Mission and Military Observers of the United Nations Military Observer Group in India and Pakistan (UNMOGIP) since last December 23.
“It is an honor to take on this role and contribute to one of the United Nations peacekeeping missions,” said Guardado Sánchez.
The general said he was “ready” for the mission and described the appointment not only as a personal achievement, but as a reflection of Mexico’s dedication to maintaining peace in the world.
“I am proud to represent both Mexico and the UN at this crucial moment for UN peacekeeping,” he said.

UNMOGIP is one of the oldest UN peace operations, having been created in 1948 with the mandate to monitor the ceasefire between India and Pakistan along the Line of Control (LoC) in the disputed region of Jammu. and Kashmir.
The UN highlighted Guardado Sánchez’s “long and distinguished career” in the Mexican Army, where he was recently Commissioner of the National Guard in Yucatán.
Previously he was liaison with Congress for the Joint Chiefs of Staff of National Defense (2022-2023), head of the Regional Training Center (2021-2022) and head of Section G-7 (counternarcotics operations) of the Joint Chiefs of Staff of National Defense (2018-2019).
He was also Commander of the Joint Peace Operations Training Center in Mexico (2017-2018) and served in the UN Verification Mission in Colombia (2016-2017) as regional head of Observers.
In Mexico, he obtained a bachelor’s degree in Military Administration at the Higher War School and a Master’s Degree in National Security at the Center for Higher Naval Studies.
He also graduated from the Advanced Armor Officer Course at the United States Army Armor Center and trained at the Argentine Joint Peace Operations Training Center (CAECOPAZ).
Guardado Sánchez will replace Argentine Rear Admiral Guillermo Pablo Ríos, according to the organization.
