The value of the economy of Mexican migrants in the United States amounts to 781,000 million annually, an amount that amounts to 2,06 billion dollars when considering all people of Mexican descent, so they would be the tenth economy of the world, a study of the Latin Research Center Donor Collaborative (LDC) would reveal on Monday.

“If the total of Mexicans in the United States, who identify as Mexico, were an independent country, would be the tenth largest country in the world,” only below the United States, China, Japan, Germany, India, United Kingdom, France, Russia and Canada, said Ana Teresa Ramírez, general director of the Laboratory of Ideas, based on official figures of 2024.

President Claudia Sheinbaum asked to present this study at her daily conference as part of her strategy to convince US President Donald Trump, to soften her promises of mass deportations, because about half of the 11 million undocumented people in the United States are Mexican.

In that sense, Ramírez said that Latinos in the United States are currently between the fourth and the fifth largest economy in the world, but stressed that only Mexicans, removing all other nationalities in the region, would be the tenth.

“Imagine what that equation is when we see that we are 130 (millions of people) here, almost 40 (millions of Mexicans) there, with this GDP (Gross Domestic Product) and with the GDP of Mexico. This synergy is incredible, it is a tremendous opportunity,” he said.

In addition, he predicted that in the next two or three years, Latinos could position themselves as the third economy worldwide, exceeding Germany.

Sheinbaum recalled that 20% of the income of the Mexican population in the United States is sent to Mexico in remittances, which means that 80% of what they perceive stays in that country.

“It is very important that all Mexicans know him and all of the Americans also know him, all nationalities, but particularly we and Americans to recognize that work, who know what he means for their country and that it is part of all dialogues also in migration issues,” he emphasized.

Mexicans are almost 60% of all Latinos in the US

Mexicans are almost 60% of all Latinos in the United States, where Hispanics represent 19.5% of the population, the second largest group after Anglo -Saxons.

Ramírez stressed that of the 38 million Mexicans living in the United States, only an estimated 4 million are undocumented and pointed out that one in four young people under 18 in that country is Latin.

The researcher said, despite everything, Latinos in the United States live in fear of Trump’s migratory policies.

“There is fear for our Latinos, there is fear for people who are specifically undocumented, but we continue to grow, we continue to produce,” he said.

He explained that companies owned by Latinos grew 44% between 2018 and 2023 and that these companies contribute 800,000 million dollars annually to the US economy.

He also highlighted the importance of Mexican women, as he said they have the highest employment rate of any other group in the United States, in addition to the Latinas take 86% of all home decisions.

Ramírez also pointed out the myths that exist around Latin migrants, such as that they increase crime, that they only receive benefits and do not contribute to the economy, which take away the work of Americans and that are a burden on the economy.

However, he stressed that immigrants contribute almost 100,000 million dollars of taxes.

“The reason for this presentation is to close the great space that exists between stereotypes, myths, prejudices and the reality of who we are in that country,” he emphasized.
