The young Mexican Valeria Palacios Cruz won this Wednesday one of the three World Education Medals (World Education Medals) 2025 in the student category for her innovative social and environmental proposals through artificial intelligence (AI).
The awards, founded two years ago by the technology multinational HP, announced today in London the three winners for 2025, one for each of the three categories: Leaders, educators and students, in which Palacios won.
Along with the 19-year-old Mexican, the American Rebecca Winthrop, director of the Universal Education Center at the Brookings Institution, was also awarded in the leaders category, and the Indian Vineeta Garg, head of IT at the SRDAV Public School in New Delhi, in the educators category, the organization indicated in a statement.

‘AI can create a real difference’: Valeria Palacios
Palacios, a student at the Ceulver/TecNM University of Veracruz, applies artificial intelligence to robotics and drone technologies to address the environmental and social problems he detected in his local community.
For example, it developed, through initiatives such as “Clean Water Done”, “Drones for Reforestation” or “Mantarraya Project”, drones capable of removing garbage from water; replant deforested habitats with seeds or assist during emergency work, respectively.
Likewise, she was also the creator of “CONIA”, a service robot designed to help older people live independently and that is capable of recognizing medications, interpreting printed materials or detecting potential emergency situations.
“This recognition reflects my belief that AI should be applied where it can create a real difference for people and the planet (…) Thank you, HP, for recognizing the potential of young innovators in the use of AI for a positive social and environmental impact,” Palacios said in the note.
HP’s global director of Education Business and Strategy, Mayank Dhingra, praised the Mexican’s work, which he said “highlights how taking advantage of the latest technologies can pave the way to a brighter future in education, offering hope and progress to society.”
The three winners of the World Education Medals will be recognized on January 20 at the “Education Leaders Forum”, held in London.
