Mexico and Brazil agreed to strengthen cooperation in scientific, economic and commercial development, after two days of “productive” meetings in Mexico City amid the concern for commercial tensions unleashed by the protectionism of the United States.
The high -level meeting concluded this Thursday with the meeting between President Claudia Sheinbaum with the Brazilian delegation in Palacio Nacional, headed by the Vice President of Brazil, Geraldo Alckmin, and composed of almost 200 entrepreneurs.
“We received in the National Palace to the delegation of Brazil headed by Vice President Geraldo Alckmin. In these two days, very productive meetings were held between Mexican and Brazilian businessmen and entrepreneurs to strengthen cooperation in scientific, economic and environmental development; they also shared experiences of impulse to industrialization,” Shienbaum said in a message on social networks.
After the meeting, Alckmin, also Minister of Development, Industry, Commerce and Services of Brazil, informed the media that “the conversation was very good” and stressed that Sheinbaum “brought together almost all its cabinet, from the Chancellor, the Minister of Energy, Health, Economy, Agriculture, was also there science and technology.”

Alckim stressed that the activities of the Brazilian aeronautical company Embraer were also mentioned, which “has a component factory here, has more than 1,000 employees, sold and is delivering 20 planes for Mexico.”
“It is a very important contract from the point of view of commercial, commercial aviation and we have expressed our intention to supply the C-390, the cargo plane,” he said.
As part of the recovery of the Mexican State Aviation airline, Mexico already received two E195-E2 E195-E2 aircraft with capacity for 132 passengers.
Create synergies between the two largest economies in Latin America
Alckmin also clarified that Brazil “at no time was it thought of having a free trade agreement with Mexico, this after the Mexican president ruled out that possibility.
Before media, the Brazilian vice president said that “Free Trade (Brazil) we have in Mercosur, which is a treaty, so we have free trade and customs union”, and what Brazil is “working with Mexico is to update, expand the foreign trade agreement and investment called oil 53 and oil 55”.
The Brazilian vice president said that these agreements are over 20 years old. In the case of ACE 53 (Economic Complementation Agreement in force since 2000), they cover practically 12 % of the productive sector, and therefore, “it has reduced coverage.”
In this regard, he said that an agreement was reached with President Sheinbaum with a calendar of conversations for the update of these bilateral instruments, whose signature is scheduled for mid -2026.
Alckmin stressed that Brazil and Mexico “are the two largest economies in Latin America, so all work consists in creating synergies, in being able to increase commercial flow, which is already important (…) work is to increase these reciprocal investments and commercial flow.”
As for commercial flow, he said that “Mexico is the sixth destination” of Brazilian exports.
“It is the tenth in imports and the seventh in commercial flow. Last year there were almost 14,000 million dollars. There is a surplus for Brazil of more than 2,000 million dollars. Therefore, it is an important commercial flow,” he said.
On the day, the head of government of Mexico City, Clara Brugada, delivered Thursday the keys of Mexico City to Alankmin, in an act qualified by the capital government as of “friendship and cooperation” between the two nations.
