Mexico and the United States spoke this Tuesday about “maritime cooperation”, after the US attack on four vessels allegedly linked to drug trafficking in which 14 people were traveling in the Pacific Ocean, with a survivor who is being searched by the Mexican Navy.

Through a statement on social networks, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE) reported the meeting of Foreign Minister Juan Ramón de la Fuente with the United States ambassador to Mexico, Ronald Johnson, and the head of the Semar, Raymundo Morales, at the headquarters of the Mexican Foreign Ministry.

“The meeting, held on the instructions of President Claudia Sheinbaum, aimed to strengthen bilateral coordination between Mexico and the United States in maritime matters,” indicated the note that, paradoxically, did not mention the attack in the Pacific.

He also noted that “in an atmosphere of cordiality, the parties agreed that the main priority is the safeguarding of human life at sea,” as well as “full respect for national sovereignty, reaffirming the commitment to the understanding and cooperation that have historically characterized the relationship between both nations.”

Mexico cooperates, but is not subordinated

“Mexico cooperates with all countries, but is not subordinated to any. It acts with regional responsibility, with a pacifist and universal vocation,” said De la Fuente in statements without questions alongside Morales while highlighting Semar’s defense of the limits of Mexican waters, although he again omitted to comment on the attack by the alleged boats linked to drug trafficking.

Hours earlier, Semar stated that “the search and rescue operation” continues in the south of Mexico, in the Pacific, of a survivor who was traveling on one of the vessels allegedly linked to drug trafficking that United States forces attacked “in international waters.”

Without giving more details, he noted that “the search and rescue operation remains active based on the report received by the US Coast Guard, in which there was no further information about the reported person.”

The agency stated that the action to locate the “castaway” is carried out about 830 kilometers southwest of the port of Acapulco.

The Navy’s version contrasts with that of Sheinbaum, who during his morning press conference had confirmed that the person who survived after the attack on the boats in which 14 people were traveling had been rescued.

“I made the proposal today to the Secretary of the Navy and the Secretary of Foreign Affairs, so that these issues be discussed at a table, because we want all international treaties to be complied with,” said the president.

“We do not agree with these attacks as they occur,” said the president in her conference.

This Tuesday, the US Secretary of War, Pete Hegseth, reported that the Army killed fourteen people after attacking four boats apparently belonging to drug trafficking in Eastern Pacific waters.

Hegseth assured that eight “narcoterrorists” died in the attack on the first boat, four in the second and of the three who were aboard the third, two died and one survived. However, he did not offer details about the fourth boat.
