Mexico, Canada and Brazil are the countries that export the most steel and their joint sales cover half of what the US market imports, while Canada is, by far, the largest aluminum supplier, since it supplies almost 60% of this global volume from the three countries.
The president of the US, Donald Trump, advanced this Sunday that will impose 25% tariffs on imports of steel and aluminum, and that on Tuesday or Wednesday he will announce new rates to the countries that tax US products.
EU imported more than 26 million tons of steel in 2024, according to preliminary data of the International Trade Administration (ITA), a US government -dependent agency.
The main suppliers in that year were Canada (5.9 million tons), Brazil (4.1 million tons), Mexico (3.2 million tons), South Korea (2.5 million tons), Vietnam (1.2 million tons) and Japan and Japan (1.07 million tons).
The first country in Europe was Germany, in the seventh position, with 975,900 tons.
The volume of steel imported by US in 2024 was a disbursement of 31,680 million dollars.
The largest exporters in monetary terms were Canada (7,135 million dollars), Mexico (3,499 million), Brazil (2,993 million dollars) and South Korea (2,895 million).

In the case of aluminum, EU imported 5.4 million tons in 2024, according to ITA.
The main aluminum supplier for the US market was Canada, which sold 3.15 million tons, 58% of the entire metal that imported EU.
Next, at considerable distance, Arab Emirates (347,033 tons) and China (222,871 tons) were placed.
EU aluminum imports amounted to 17,690 million dollars last year. Of that figure, Canada pocketed more than half, that is, 9,438 million.
Purchases to Arab Emirates rose to 916.7 million dollars and those from China to 809 million.
