A total of 29 people imprisoned for their links with drug trafficking organizations were extradited this Thursday to the United States, the government reported while negotiating with Washington the cancellation of tariffs.
“This action is part of the work of coordination, cooperation and bilateral reciprocity, within the framework of respect for the sovereignty of both nations,” said the Ministry of Safety and Citizen Protection on an information card.
According to Reuters sources, among the extradited was the drug lord Rafael Caro Quintero, convicted of murdering an American anti -narcotics agent in 1985.
Earlier, the Webb County Sheriff’s Office, in the state of Texas, reported from the extradition to the United States of Miguel Ángel Trevino Morales, aka the “Z-40”, and Óscar Omar Trevino Morales, aka the “Z-42”, brothers and excellent of the Zetas that were arrested by the Mexican armed forces in 2013 and 2015, respectively.
The State Department did not immediately respond to a request for comments by Reuters.
President Donald Trump has been threatening for weeks with imposing tariffs if Mexico does not make illegal drug trafficking, especially fentanyl, and the large flows of irregular migrants seeking to go to US territory.
When announcing extradition in a statement published on Facebook, the Webb Sheriff’s Office urged the population to “be careful when visiting Nuevo Laredo and other parts of Tamaulipas”, the state of which Los Zetas were originally, famous for several massacres, some of them against dozens of migrants who sought to arrive irregularly to the United States.

“Previous incidents have shown that the cartel tends to respond with extreme violence against Mexican government entities, which increases the risk to citizens of Nuevo Laredo,” he added.
The Treviño lawyer, Juan Manuel Delgado, told Reuters that it would not be an extradition if not a “banishment” or “expulsion” from the country since the processes of both to be extradited were in “judicial opinion phase.”
Delgado added that officially he has not been notified of this process.
