Mexico dropped two positions in the 2024 Global Rule of Law Index of the World Justice Project (WJP), ranking 118th out of 142 countries evaluated.
The country obtained a score of 0.41 on a scale of 0 to 1, where 1 represents the maximum adherence to the rule of law. This decline reflects a deterioration in key areas such as criminal justice, civil justice and the absence of corruption.
Among the most concerning trends, the criminal justice system has shown a steady decline, going from a score of 0.32 in 2015 to 0.25 in 2024, making it the lowest-scoring factor.
Additionally, the civil justice system has stagnated with a score of 0.37 in the last four editions of the report.

The country also presented its worst result in the absence of corruption, ranking 135th out of 142 countries.
In terms of order and security, although it has improved slightly since the last edition with a score of 0.52 compared to the previous 0.50, it is still far from the 0.61 it reached in 2016.
Mexico’s best performance was observed in the open government factor, with a score of 0.57, which places it in position 47. However, this figure is lower than the 0.61 it registered in 2019. In addition, the integrity in the electoral processes and the transition of power in accordance with the law with a score of 0.60 and a position in 73rd place.

The WJP Rule of Law Index assesses compliance with the rule of law in different countries, measuring factors such as limits on government power, corruption, fundamental rights, security, and civil and criminal justice. The report allows us to observe how governments guarantee respect for the laws and the rights of their citizens
