The state Correos de México, responsible for the public correspondence, messaging and parcel service at the country and international level, temporarily suspended postal and parcel shipments to the United States, as of this Wednesday, the federal government reported.
This after the United States Government, through Executive Order 14,324, suspended tax -free income for packages with goods with a value of less than $ 800, an exemption known as “of Minimis”.
The measure, said the Mexican Foreign Ministry in a statement, “applies not only for Mexico but for all countries”, so, as of August 29, 2025, the United States “will charge taxes to all packages received from anywhere in the world and regardless of the value of the goods.”
In this sense, it was indicated in the note, Mexico joins a list of countries that include Germany, Australia, Canada, Japan and New Zealand, which also suspended their postal services to the United States.
“Mexico continues the dialogue with the United States authorities, as well as with international postal organizations, in order to define mechanisms that allow the resume services in an orderly manner, providing certainty to users and avoiding setbacks in the delivery of goods,” said Correos de México in the note.
In addition, he reiterated the commitment of the Government of Mexico to promote the interests of all Mexicans through negotiation and joint collaboration.
Thousands of Mexicans send packages to the United States every year, mainly destined for friends and family in the country.
At the beginning of April, the US president, Donald Trump, decided to apply a charge to the packages that would enter American territory, who had to enter into force on May 2.
However, it never applied due to the indefinition of the measure and its entry into force was suspended until August 15, when US authorities shared the necessary requirements for the implementation of their executive order.
As stipulated then, the moratorium for this kind of shipments will disappear next Friday, August 29, from which customs rights must be paid before sending.
The greats harmed by Trump’s decision are the Chinese giants of electronic commerce, such as Temu or Shein, which, according to official data from the Office of Customs and Border Protection (CBP), processed more than 1.3 billion ‘minimis’ shipments towards the US in 2024.
