A total of 32 livestock cargoes with the presence of a barely worm have been intercepted and returned to their places of origin since the end of last November, to avoid the propagation of the plague to the center and north of the country, the Government of Mexico said.

Derived from joint work between the Secretariats of Agriculture and Rural Development (Agriculture) and of the National Defense (Defense), “From November to date, 32 Loads of cattle with the presence of Cattle Barer (GBG) have been intercepted to their place of origin, which contributes to avoid the dissemination of the plague towards the center and north of the country,” the government warned by a statement.

It was explained that within the framework of the 97 ordinary session of the Technical Council of the National Service of Health, Safety and Agrifood Quality (Senasica), the head of the agency, Javier Calderón Elizalde, thanked the support of the Army and the National Guard to guarantee the safety of the agents who carry out inspections of the animals that circulate in the south-south-south of the country.

He explained that his work has been “strategic” to deter transporters who seek to evade seals, flyers and verification and inspection points – both federal and state – as well as to protect shipments with the presence of GBG during his return to the place of origin.

He stressed that, since the first confirmed case of GBG at the Federal Verification and Inspection Point (PVIF) of Catazajá, Chiapas, on November 21, 2024, the veterinarium doctors of Senasica had the support of agents of the National Guard, “who have protected the shipments until concluding the epidemiological and administrative investigations.”

Last Tuesday, President Claudia Sheinbaum celebrated the United States decision to reopen the border for Mexican cattle from July 7 after the crisis for the plague of the boreride worm, although she noted that the work tables follow to accelerate this reopening.

Sheinbaum said that, in the first instance, on July 7, the Prieta Agua, Sonora border will be reopened; On July 14, Puerto Palomas, Chihuahua; On July 21, San Jerónimo, Chihuahua; On August 18 that of Acuña, Coahuila and on September 15 that of Colombia, Nuevo León.

The Sheinbaum’s reaction occurred after a day before, the Secretary of Agriculture, Julio Berdegué and Brooke Rollins, Secretary of Agriculture of the United States (USDA, in English), agreed, after a virtual meeting, gradually reopen the border ports of the southern United States for cattle, bison and Mexican horses.

These points remained closed since May 11 before the expansion of the plague.

Res beef was impacted by the outbreak of the borers, which caused the suspension of exports of live cattle to the United States, with losses estimated at 700 million dollars.
