Mexico City, (EFE) .- The Secretary of Economy, Marcelo Ebrard, said that as of this Monday a 17% tariff for the export of the tomato should be paid, although he stressed that they are negotiating with authorities of that country to reverse this and other taxes.

“Meanwhile you have to pay (the tariff). But we will have to battle to reach another agreement,” said the official in an interview for Radio Formula.

However, Ebrard indicated that this tariff, which entered into force today, will have an “immediate impact” in the United States, which will help Mexico negotiate an agreement to reduce or remove tax.

In addition, he emphasized that Mexico’s economy is very important for the United States, as it is its main importer, above China, Germany and Japan together.

“That will probably be the greatest protection that our economy can have,” he said.

He also acknowledged that the relationship with the United States will be “tension all the time”, so the country must get used to having “many unpredictable” while Donald Trump is in the presidency of the United States.

He pointed out, however, that the threat of imposing 30% on Mexican products from August 1 is something that was notified of all countries, although he recalled that it is something similar to what happened in January, when EU raised 25% to all exports in Mexico.

“What we are going to do is: Tomorrow we start the works with Ustr commerce (Office of the United States Commercial Representative) to maintain the agreement we already have and agree on some of the measures we can take together in the coming weeks,” he said.

He insisted that these issues need “cold blood and perseverance” to negotiate.

This morning, President Claudia Sheinbaum hoped that the country will achieve an agreement to avoid the tariffs posed by the United States as of August 1, and assured that her administration reached “practically an agreement” on issues such as security with the Trump government.
