In the midst of trade tensions due to the imposition of tariffs by Donald Trump and Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, Mexico is on track to break the record in the transfer of merchandise in containers through its ports that embark and disembark every day.
“During these eight months, 6.3 million containers have been moved, which represents 1.5 percent growth compared to the same period last year,” declared Claudia Hernández Sordo, General Director of the General Coordination of the Merchant Marine.

“And we are on our way to breaking our mark of 9.37 million containers annually,” stated the official from the Ministry of the Navy (Semar) within the framework of the XXIX Annual Congress of Shipping Agents, organized by Amanac.
Currently, Mexican ports are part of the great network of world trade and are at the forefront of adapting to global trends in cargo containerization, he commented.
“If we manage to break the record in the transfer of dining rooms, it is thanks to the joint work of the government, private sector and associations, as well as the managers of dynamic, efficient seaports that are better connected to world markets,” he noted.
He recalled that Amanac is an invaluable element in the development of port activity: its almost three decades of well-acquired experiences are so enriching to continue on the right path of national development.
“I would say that the merchandise transportation market has not fallen, even on land, even with tariffs and exports have been maintained,” commented Fernando Con y Ledesma, president of the Mexican Association of Shipping Agents.
In the commercial relations of Mexico and the United States, maritime transportation is not an important part in the movement of merchandise, because 80 percent of exports are made by land, he added.
“The tariffs that may be imposed on other trading partners could surely impact the movement of cargo in the future,” said the businessman.
There is talk in the port network, he noted, of more than 9 million containers that were handled last year
“I would tell you that if we maintain that volume, it would be reasonably favorable in a contracted economy,” he noted.
If we end up with the 9 million containers, there would be no impact from the tariffs, explained the president of Amanac.

Plan Mexico specifically talks about building and modernizing infrastructure, it is even considering projects to solve the problems in Manzanillo, he said.
“Manzanillo is a port that handles almost 4 million tons and today it is one of the terminals that receive containers, with space problems; space problems occur many times, because the logistics chain is not well interconnected,” he considered.
“The ship arrives, then unloads the containers at the terminal, customs should do its verification work to combat illegal activities and the container should leave, that is not really happening and we are not well synchronized,” which is a challenge for the logistics chain so that the containers are in the port for as short a time as possible, mentioned the president of Amanac.
