Mexico reduced by 8.3 million the number of poor in 2024, to a total of 38.5 million people, almost 17% less than 46.8 million 2022, the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI) revealed on Wednesday.
The percentage of poverty population fell to 29.6% in 2024 compared to the proportion of 36.3% of 2022, a decrease of 6.7 percentage points, according to the most recent measurement of INEGI.
This is the first time that the agency is responsible for the official measurement of poverty in Mexico, a country with about 132 million inhabitants, after the disappearance of the National Council for the Evaluation of Social Development Policy (Coneval).
In addition, INEGI explained that at least 2.1 million people left extreme poverty to a total of 7 million.
This represents a proportion of 7.1% of the population and a decrease of 1.8 percentage points compared to 2022, when there were 9.1 million Mexicans in this situation.
The measurement is based on the National Survey of Household Revenue and Expenses (ENIGH) of the National Institute of Geography and Statistics (INEGI), which revealed last month that the income of Mexican households rose 10.6% from 2022 to 2024.
Mexico had added 3.8 million poor in 2020 for the Covid-19 pandemic crisis, but this number was reduced by 2022.
Now, in 2024, the country reduced in 13.4 million people the number of poor people compared to 2018, when 41.9% of the population was in this condition, which meant a reduction of 12.3 percentage points since then.
Income poverty line
While the measurement of the income poverty line is based only on the economic indicator and the value of the food and non -food basket, the general measurement of this study is multidimensional and also contemplates access to social services, food and other non -monetary resources.
In this context, INEGI reported that the population with an income lower than the revenue poverty line decreased by 10.1 million people from 2022 to 2024, reaching 46 million Mexicans, 35.4% of the total.
The Inegi also recorded a decrease of 3.4 million people with an income lower than the extreme poverty line by revenue, which now total 12.1 million people, 9.3% of the total population.

In multidimensional measurement, the agency reported that the number of people with at least one social lack fell to 80.4 million, a reduction of 4.3 million.
The most usual lack was access to social security, which affected 48.2% of the population, 62.7 million people.
Inequality between the north and the south
The Institute warned of the persistence of inequality between the north and the south.
The states with the highest proportion of poverty are Chiapas (66%), Guerrero (58.1%), Oaxaca (51.6%), Veracruz (44.5%) and Puebla (43.4%), all in the south and center of the country.
While the entities with the lowest population in poverty were Baja California (9.9%), Baja California Sur (10.2%), Nuevo León (10.6%), Coahuila (12.4%) and Sonora (14.1%), all in the north.
INEGI also reported that in 2024 at the national level, 24.2 million people presented educational lag, although this number was reduced by 0.8 million compared to 2022.
In percentage points, the lag decreased in Michoacán (3.2%), Querétaro (3.2%) and Hidalgo (2%).
While six entities increased their educational lag, mainly in Chiapas, which passed 31.1% to 34%; Oaxaca, from 29.1% to 30.5%; and Veracruz, from 25.5% to 26.3%.
