The Argentine president, Javier Milei, celebrated this Thursday the trade and investment agreement signed in Washington between Argentina and the United States, describing it as “a pillar for Argentina to once again be part of the Western world,” and urged the National Congress to approve it.
In a statement Milei considered that the agreement “consolidates a strategic relationship between both countries based on economic openness, clear rules for international exchange, and a modern view of commercial complementarity.”
In addition, he explained that the pact “aims to reduce tariff and non-tariff barriers, facilitate trade in goods and services, modernize customs procedures and promote investment in strategic sectors such as energy, critical minerals, infrastructure and technology.”

“This understanding reaffirms the decision of the National Government to integrate Argentina into the world, leave behind decades of isolation and move towards an open, competitive and predictable economy, which rewards investment, work and innovation,” added the text, which also described the signing of the agreement as “one more pillar that allows Argentina today to once again be part of the Western world.”
On the other hand, the statement noted that Argentina “is facing a unique situation in its history to recover global leadership, both political and economic, and demonstrate that it has everything to recover its greatness of yesteryear.”
The president also announced that the agreement will be sent to Congress for treatment, in accordance with the provisions of the National Constitution, and stressed that “he trusts that legislators understand the responsibility that lies ahead of them to live up to this unprecedented opportunity.”
Although so far the Milei Government has not released any official information about the text signed this Thursday, last November the United States and Argentina announced the signing of a framework agreement, on which, according to what a spokesperson for the Foreign Ministry informed EFE, the text signed today is based.
That joint announcement last November explained that the framework reached would include tariff, regulatory and intellectual property aspects and would cover everything from agricultural and industrial goods of all types and critical minerals to electronic commerce.
This Thursday’s announcement also follows the signing this Wednesday, also in Washington, of an agreement on critical minerals between both countries.
The United States is the largest direct foreign investor in Argentina and one of the South American country’s main trading partners.
In addition, it is the third destination for Argentina’s exports, behind Brazil and China, and the third country of origin for Argentina’s imports, also behind Brazil and China.
