The Mexican electromobility solutions company VEMO announced that in 2025 it will expand its charging network for electric cars to more states in the country, which it already has available in Puebla, Guanajuato, Nuevo León and Querétaro.

“In 2025 we plan our arrival in other states of the country,” said Carlos Levy, Head of Real Estate & Public Charging Network at VEMO.

Likewise, the manager recalled that the expansion of charging infrastructure is key to accelerating the adoption of electric vehicles.

To date, VEMO has installed more than 600 chargers in the Mexican Republic, as part of its commitment to the expansion of its public charging network for electric vehicles, the so-called VEMO Charging Network.

At the end of last September, the Electromobility Association (EMA) reported a total of 42,915 chargers installed in the country, of which 3,273 are public and 39,642 private.

Popularity of electric cars grows

Sales in Mexico of electric vehicles (EV) and plug-in hybrids (PHEV) showed accelerated growth during 2024, which shows the notable interest of Mexicans in adopting more sustainable and environmentally friendly transportation options.

According to the EMA, 8,334 EVs were sold in the third quarter of 2024, representing an increase of 27% compared to the previous quarter. In the same period, PHEV sales reached 7,921 units, with a growth of 46.3%. In total, between January and September 2024, the main brands operating in Mexico placed 39,095 electric vehicles and 25,042 plug-in hybrids.

“The exponential growth in EV acquisition is great news, but also a challenge that we must face, because as the number of cars increases, it becomes more urgent to guarantee access to chargers. This panorama drives the need to establish alliances to cover the energy demand of EVs,” said Constantino Rodríguez, Head Commercial of VEMO.

In 2024, VEMO established alliances with automotive companies such as BMW, BYD, General Motors, GAC and ZEEKR, with the aim of providing its charging infrastructure to owners of electric cars of these brands.

The strengthening of electromobility during 2024 supports Mexico as one of the main leaders in creating a clean mobility ecosystem. According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), in 2023, sales of electric vehicles in Latin America will exceed 90,000 units, with Mexico, Brazil, Colombia and Costa Rica leading the region.

The IEA estimates that about 20% of cars sold in 2023 were electric, that is, approximately one in five and predicts that the share of EVs in global sales will reach 35% in 2030.
