More than 34,000 people registered in the call to compete in the first judicial elections in Mexico, where citizens will elect judges, magistrates and the Supreme Court at the polls in 2025, according to the final count this Monday.

“It was a complete success, something unprecedented, historic, the registration of people to be part of the Judiciary,” declared the president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, in her morning conference.

In the Executive’s call alone, there were 18,447 interested people, said Arturo Zaldívar, general coordinator of Politics and Government.

This is in addition to the 11,904 registered through the Senate and the 3,805 in the Judiciary, since each of the three branches must nominate their candidates, according to the constitutional reform promulgated on September 15 by the then president Andrés Manuel López Obrador (2018 -2024).

“In the evaluation committee (of the Executive) we are convinced that this stage that we have concluded has been historic, the response of the lawyers of Mexico has been impressive, the results are impressive, they exceeded any expectations,” Zaldívar said.

In the Executive’s call, 6,101 women, 10,862 men and 106 people of non-binary gender were registered, Zaldívar detailed.

Of them, there were 480 candidates for the Supreme Court and 77 for the upper chamber of the Electoral Tribunal of the Judicial Branch of the Federation (TEPJF), while the rest were for judges and magistrates.

Of the other two branches, it is still unknown how many records there are for each court.

After these records, the evaluation committees of each of the three branches must publish the list of people who have met the eligibility requirements on December 15 and, at the latest, on February 4, they must refine the list, according to Zaldívar. .

The committees of each branch will send a list of 10 finalists for the vacancies of the Supreme Court, the Electoral Court and the new Judicial Disciplinary Court, and six for each court and collegiate tribunal.

And in February the final lists of each power will be approved for a total of three candidates from each of the committees for the superior courts and two for each vacancy of judges and magistrates of collegiate and circuit courts.

Although the National Electoral Institute (INE) requested an extension to hold the election months later, Sheinbaum now clarified that the date of the elections remains June 1, 2025.
