The City of Buenos Aires will house again from 2027 the Grand Prix of the Argentine Republic of MotoGP, as announced on Monday by its governor, Jorge Macri, who stressed that this decision is “a first step to apply to the city as the headquarters of Formula One”.

“It is a pride to officially announce a long -awaited news, which is the return of the MotoGP in 2027, which has its date here in Buenos Aires,” Macri announced, in a ceremony at the Oscar and Juan Gálvez autodrome of the Argentine capital.

The MotoGP Argentina Grand Prix, which was last played in Buenos Aires in 1999 and that since 2014 takes place in the Termas Autodrome in Río Hondo, in the province of Santiago del Estero, will return to the capital in March 2027.

In 2026, the South American country will not house the competition since it will focus on the remodeling of the Buenos Aires Autodrome, which will require an important economic investment.

These renovations will be in charge of the German company Tilke Engineers & Architects, whose founder, Hermann Tilke, explained during the ceremony in Buenos Aires that the investment will be more than 100 million dollars and will consist of two phases.

“Phase 1 is immediate, to receive the MotoGP in March 2027 and phase 2 is a possible advance towards formula one later,” said Tilke, who was “very proud” of being able to work in an autodrome “as magical and historical” as the Gálvez.

The reforms, according to Macri, will begin in the month of October and will include “work on the track, the boxes, the paddock, defenses and security areas and the incorporation of the latest technology.”

“With this we took care of the identity of a historical place where giants ran (of motor racing) such as Juan Manuel Fangio, Carlos Reutemann and Michael Schumacher,” he added, and stressed that these remodeling will lead to the “to international standards” autodrome.

The Spanish Carlos Ezpeleta, Director General Sports General of Dorna -MotoGP Organizer -who mentioned that the return of the competition to Buenos Aires takes place in a moment of important global growth of the competition and said that the agreement will be extended, in principle until 2030.

Ezpeleta also stressed that the investment in the circuit and in the event will create 5,000 jobs, will be vital for the development of tourism in the city and represents “a great opportunity for Buenos Aires as much as for motorcycling.”
